Essential Conversations

I loved the talk Essential Conversations by Joy D. Jones (April 2021 General Conference)

One of my favorite points she shared was this – “As children learn and progress, their beliefs will be challenged. But as they are properly equipped, they can grow in faith, courage, and confidence, even in the midst of strong opposition.”

Our children will have their beliefs challenged as they grow and progress. That’s a sure bet. But we can have essential conversations with them to help equip and prepare them for such situations.

Role Playing Real Life Situations

The suggestion that Sister Jones make to do role playing with our children really spoke to my heart.

Here’s what she said about it – “As they act it out and then talk it out, rather than being caught unprepared in a hostile peer group setting, children can be armed with “the shield of faith wherewith [they] shall be able to quench all the fiery darts of the wicked.””

Being ready and prepared, and knowing how to respond in a situation is an amazing defense for our children to learn.

mothers day gift cards, mini mothers day cards,

For a recent Family Home Evening, we decided to take her counsel and do some role-playing of our own. We’ve done role-play activities in the past, but this time I felt prompted to try something different. When we’ve done this before I would usually think of situations to role play and write them down ahead of time.

This time, though, I decided to give each family member some slips of paper and have them think of situations to write down. It was a good activity for them to be proactive in thinking about what situations they might face (or ones that they had already faced.)

Before FHE my husband and I did talk about a few specific situations that we knew our children were dealing with and we split those up to be sure they were all included. He wrote down a few of them and I wrote down the others. We made sure to mix up some more lighthearted things in with the more serious situations to keep it fun.

Essential Conversations – Family Conversation Cards

Want to take Sister Jones’ counsel to do a role-playing activity of your own? You can print out this cute little printable and use the paper slips to have family members write down situations they might encounter in different areas of their lives.

Role-Playing Activity

  • Simply print out the strips and cut them apart on the lines.
  • Give a couple to each family member and explain to them to write down some situations they think might happen to them (or that have already happened to them.)
  • When everyone is done writing down their situations, fold them and stick them all in a basket (box, jar, hat – anything to hold them)
  • Take turns having family members choose one, read it, and decide how they would respond. Next, have them act it out and practice what words they could use in a real-life situation.
  • You could do this individually, but we found it worked great to do it in pairs. Working together made it more fun and pressure-free.

You could do these for FHE or you could stick them all in a basket and choose one each night at dinner. Or at family prayer before bedtime. Anytime you choose to do it, working in these situations to your everyday conversations can help build and strengthen testimonies.

Wishing you some joyful moments as a family as you participate in some fortifying essential conversations together.

April 2021 General Conference Mini Notes

April 2021 General Conference Mini Notes

I love General Conference! I love how much inspiring personal direction the Lord gives me. When I take time to prepare and to truly hear Him, I come away every six months when Conference ends with a renewed determination to do better. And to BE better.

The Blessings of General Conference

Elder Robert D. Hales once said, “The greatest blessings of general conference come to us after the conference is over. Remember the pattern recorded frequently in scripture: We gather to hear the words of the Lord and then we return home to live them.”

The 2 days we have when General Conference is broadcast are just the beginning! If we simply listen and then go about our lives without making changes, we are missing out on the greatest blessings that Conference has to offer us. Now that Conference is over, it’s time for us to APPLY what we’ve learned to help us BECOME what our Father in Heaven wants for us to become.

printable quotes from april 2021 general conference

I’ve included a printable of some of my favorite quotes from these sessions to help you remember the words we heard during Conference. I’ve made these into cute little minis that you can share on the go! Because these messages are best when we apply them to all areas of our lives.

Here are some fun ways to use these printable Conference quotes:

  • Deliver them to your ministering sisters. (I promise they won’t be mad if you add some cookies or a little treat, too.) *wink
  • Put them into a lunchbox
  • Stick them in a backpack pocket
  • Tape one to the mirror
  • Put them in your teenager’s or spouse’s car
  • Print some extras for your kids to pass around to their friends! They can stick them in lockers, backpacks, or desks
  • Leave them on your children’s pillows to be found at the end of the day
  • Switch them out from time to time so that the messages of Conference truly last for the next 6 months

May the following months bring you joy as you study and apply the words from Conference.

Studying the words from Conference is an ongoing task. As we continue to study, the words of the Lord become part of who we are as we strive to become who He wants us to be. To help you study the words from this Conference, check out my Conference Talks journal. This guided journal is a fantastic way for you to continue to study the words of the prophets and complete the challenges that President Nelson issued. And most importantly, it will become a place you can record your own personal direction that the Spirit give you as you study.

General Conference Activity Strips

General Conference Activity Strips

I’m always on the lookout for fun Conference activities for my family. Activities that keep us quiet are good. Activities that help us listen are better. But activities that help us ACT and keep Conference in our home after the Conference weekend is over are BEST. And these fun Conference Strips will fit into that category!

These simple strips can be used in so many ways. First of all, print them out, then decide how you’re going to use them! I’ve included the following suggestions, but get creative on how they could best help YOUR family to keep Conference in your home and hearts. And to act on all you’ve heard over the weekend.

general conference apostles strips

General Conference Activity Strips

There are strips for each of the Twelve Apostles, with an extra sheet of President Nelson (since we usually hear from him more often.) There is a sheet of strips with “Sister_____” for you to fill in, and then a sheet with blank lines for you to add the names of additional speakers.

Here are some ways you can use these fun strips:

Before Conference:

  • Sometime in the days leading up to Conference, have each family member look up and learn something about each of the Twelve and write it out on their strip. When it’s that speakers turn, it’s fun to read a little bit about them to get to know them better. You could then add their notes of what they teach us on the strip (or on the back.) This is a great FHE to prepare for Conference!
  • Have each person choose an apostle strip and have each person make a guess of what we’ll learn from him on the back. During Conference, they can take their chosen apostle and write notes on the front. When Conference is done, have each person go back and see if their guesses were right!

During Conference:

  • Print a set for each individual family member, or print just one for the whole family to work on together.
  • As each speaker speaks, mark the session (so you can refer to it again later) and then write down your favorite quotes, feelings, thoughts, or what you learned.
  • If you print one set for the whole family, you can divvy them up between everyone. Each person would be responsible for a few speakers.
  • Have the family work on each strip together. Pass each strip around as you listen to the speaker and have everyone add a thought or inspiration they have.
  • Color in the little pictures as you listen, or draw your own on the speakers that aren’t from the Quorum of the Twelve. Bonus – color their ties to match the tie they’re wearing when they speak!

“The greatest blessings of general conference come to us after the conference is over. Remember the pattern recorded frequently in scripture: We gather to hear the words of the Lord and then we return home to live them.”

-Robert D. Hales

After Conference:

Listening during Conference is only half the work! The BEST part comes as we apply what we’ve learned once Conference is over.

Elder Robert D. Hales once said, “The greatest blessings of general conference come to us after the conference is over. Remember the pattern recorded frequently in scripture: We gather to hear the words of the Lord and then we return home to live them.”

Here’ are some ways you can use these strips to continue to keep Conference in your hearts in the weeks after:

  • You can use these strips for upcoming FHE lessons. Simply choose one, listen / watch or study the talk together and then discuss how you can take action to apply what you’ve learned.
  • Use them as a dinner time discussion. Pull one out and read it over dinner and have a short discussion. What do you remember about the talk? What have you been doing to apply the teachings? What could you do this week to take action on this talk?
  • Have a Sunday devotional. Have each person grab a strip and share. Or have one person be in charge of teaching a short lesson and sharing their testimony about the talk.
  • Make them into a chain. Fold each strip over lengthwise (they are a little fat if you don’t) and then staple them into a chain. Then use this chain in any of the above settings. Pull of a strip each day at dinner, each week at your Sunday devotional or FHE night.
  • Put them in a “Conference basket.” Fold the strips and put them in a basket (or box, jar, bowl, hat, anything that will hold them.) Again, you can pull one out when you do one of the above activities.
  • Search for them. For a fun FHE activity, hide the strips around the room. Everyone has to search for them, then share.
  • Show them off. Choose one each week to display on your fridge or bulletin board. It will act as a reminder to everyone to live what they’ve learned.

p.s. If you’d like to help your family make the most of General Conference, check out my General Conference journals. They are a great way to prepare for Conference, then record your insights and impressions as you listen. The packet also includes an action plan so once Conference is over, you’ll be ready to apply what you’ve heard. And – there’s even a fun, special edition just for the kids.

I hope your Conference weekend is full of lots of listening and inspiration.

God’s Promises to Covenant Israel Printable

God’s Promises to Covenant Israel Printable

I loved this General Conference weekend of inspired messages. Each message lifted me. And each one encouraged me to continue to strive to reach my divine potential. I always love looking for the challenges that President Nelson issues us. And of course, I wasn’t disappointed!

President Nelson’s Challenge

In the Sunday morning session, in his talk, Let God Prevail, President Nelson gave us a challenge for the next six months.

“As you study your scriptures during the next six months, I encourage you to make a list of all that the Lord has promised He will do for covenant Israel. … Ponder these promises. Talk about them with your family and friends. Then live and watch for these promises to be fulfilled in your own life.”

god's promises to covenant israel

I’m so excited about this challenge. I can’t wait to discover these promises in my scripture studies in the coming months. And since I love a pretty printable, I just had to create something to keep my list of covenant promises on.

This printable has spaces for everything you need to fulfill this challenge!

  • Scripture Reference – write down the scripture where you find the promise.
  • Promise – write down the promise that God makes.
  • Ponder – write down your thoughts and you ponder this promise yourself and as you share it with your family and friends.
  • and lastly,
  • Watch for this Promise to be Fulfilled in my Own Life – write down where you see this promise in your own life. Maybe you won’t see these right away, so come back and fill it in later if you recognize its fulfillment at a later time.

I created 2 options for you to choose from. Choose your favorite and then print them out and share them – with your family, ministering sisters, and friends. Each has 2 pages – when you’ve filled those up, simply print out more of the second page!

I am always amazed at the changes I see in my life and in the lives of those around me when I make the decision to accept a challenge the Prophet gives. I’m excited to put this challenge to the test as I list out these promises and as I let God prevail in my life a little more each day.

May you find blessings these next six months as you let God prevail a little more in YOUR life each day. And as you discover, ponder, and create your own list of God’s promises to covenant Israel, may you find joy in these promises.

p.s. This talk was all about letting God prevail in our lives. If you loved the quote as much as I do, check out this beautiful printable in my shop. It’s a great way to remind you – and all your family – to let God prevail in your life.

If you’re anything like me, you’re always on the lookout for fun ways to keep the family engaged and attentive during General Conference. And coloring pages and activities are great, but I love when the activities we do also encourage *listening* and helping us to remember what we’ve heard.

Hearing Him Through His Servants

We’ve been encouraged to “Hear Him” constantly this year. D&C 1:38 says, “…whether by mine own voice or the voice of my servants, it is the same.” One of the best ways for us to hear Him is through his prophets and apostles. And what better time for that than General Conference!

With this simple activity, you can encourage your family to listen for what Heavenly Father is speaking to them – individually.

This printable is easy enough for the little ones – they can simply draw what they hear. It’s also great for the older ones to jot down some simple and quick notes as well.

There are a couple of fun ways to use this cute printable.

  • Simply print out a copy for each family member and as they listen to conference, they can write down what they hear – what things touch them personally.
  • Print out the “poster” version and attach to a poster board or large sheet of paper. Color it in beforehand to prepare for conference, or let the family work together to color it as they listen. Then, as you watch conference, each family member can add what they hear. Get some markers and make it fun and colorful!

After Conference

When Conference is over, it would be fun to compare notes – did everyone hear the same thing? Though everyone was listening to the same talk, each person might have *heard* something different.  Discuss why this is and what it means!

Then, stick your posters or pages up somewhere where they can been seen often. They will be a great reminder of the things that Heavenly Father shared through His leaders.

General Conference Countdown Chain

General Conference Countdown Chain

General Conference is less than a month away, which means it’s time to start getting ready for General Conference now! This weekend of spiritual messages can be so much more than just “a weekend of church.” If we allow it to be, Conference can be an uplifting, life changing event – one where we truly hear the Lord’s voice and receive direction on what He wants for us in our lives.

So often Conference tends to sneak up on me, and I realize just a few days before that it’s already here. But making the most of Conference, and really be open and ready to learn, starts by being prepared. The more prepared we are, the more we are spiritually ready to hear His voice through His servants.

Getting Ready for General Conference

In the September 2011 Ensign, Elder Utchdorf, then second counselor in the First Presidency, wrote an article called “General Conference – No Ordinary Blessing.” In this article, he encourages all members to more sincerely and actively prepare for Conference and the revelation that we can receive.

I really want to help my family be ready to hear the Lord’s voice this year.  I want each of us to be able to recognize what our Heavenly Father wants for us to know – both individually and as a family. To help us prepare, I created this fun chain. It’s a simple activity that will take just a few minutes each day, but one that I hope will really help us to consider what a blessing Conference is in our lives and ponder on how we can make the most of it.

conference countdown chain for general conference
Each day of this chain has a quote from President Utchdorf’s article and then a discussion question for us to discuss together. Simple and easy!

To Make Your Conference Countdown Chain:

  • Download the chains and print them out. Fall is coming here, so I used some fun fall colored, patterned papers. Construction paper, colored card stock or simply using white printer paper all work great as well!
  • Cut the chains along the lines. Staple them together, in number order.
  • Attach NUMBER 9 to the chain header. This will make number 1 the first chain for you to remove.
  • Place the chain in a place where you will see it daily to remind you to prepare for Conference the whole week through!

To Use Your Chain:

  • There are 9 links to the chain. You can start at any time! Starting on September 24th will make it so that you finish the Friday (the day) before General Conference.
  • Remove the next link of the chain (you should be starting with #1.)
  • Have someone read the quote, then give everyone a little time to think about it.
  • Read the discussion questions one at a time and discuss how it applies to you. Think about how It applies to both the whole family and each person as individuals.
  • Continue each day until Conference, then get ready to listen and hear what message the Lord has for you.
Older kids or no kids??  Use these discussion sheets instead! These sheets  include the same quotes and discussion prompts, but in a one page format. You can still prepare for Conference without making it into a chain.

I really hope that at the end of the week, we will be ready and open to hearing Him more this Conference weekend. And I hope you and your family will be, too.
