April 2021 General Conference Mini Notes

April 2021 General Conference Mini Notes

I love General Conference! I love how much inspiring personal direction the Lord gives me. When I take time to prepare and to truly hear Him, I come away every six months when Conference ends with a renewed determination to do better. And to BE better.

The Blessings of General Conference

Elder Robert D. Hales once said, “The greatest blessings of general conference come to us after the conference is over. Remember the pattern recorded frequently in scripture: We gather to hear the words of the Lord and then we return home to live them.”

The 2 days we have when General Conference is broadcast are just the beginning! If we simply listen and then go about our lives without making changes, we are missing out on the greatest blessings that Conference has to offer us. Now that Conference is over, it’s time for us to APPLY what we’ve learned to help us BECOME what our Father in Heaven wants for us to become.

printable quotes from april 2021 general conference

I’ve included a printable of some of my favorite quotes from these sessions to help you remember the words we heard during Conference. I’ve made these into cute little minis that you can share on the go! Because these messages are best when we apply them to all areas of our lives.

Here are some fun ways to use these printable Conference quotes:

  • Deliver them to your ministering sisters. (I promise they won’t be mad if you add some cookies or a little treat, too.) *wink
  • Put them into a lunchbox
  • Stick them in a backpack pocket
  • Tape one to the mirror
  • Put them in your teenager’s or spouse’s car
  • Print some extras for your kids to pass around to their friends! They can stick them in lockers, backpacks, or desks
  • Leave them on your children’s pillows to be found at the end of the day
  • Switch them out from time to time so that the messages of Conference truly last for the next 6 months

May the following months bring you joy as you study and apply the words from Conference.

Studying the words from Conference is an ongoing task. As we continue to study, the words of the Lord become part of who we are as we strive to become who He wants us to be. To help you study the words from this Conference, check out my Conference Talks journal. This guided journal is a fantastic way for you to continue to study the words of the prophets and complete the challenges that President Nelson issued. And most importantly, it will become a place you can record your own personal direction that the Spirit give you as you study.

Resurrection Rolls Gift Kit

Resurrection Rolls Gift Kit

Resurrection Rolls

One of our favorite family traditions at Easter time is to make Resurrection rolls (AKA Empty Tomb rolls or Easter Buns.)

If you’ve never made them before, it’s so fun! Basically, you wrap a butter and cinnamon-covered marshmallow in a crescent roll. When you cook it, the marshmallow magically disappears, creating an “empty tomb.”

The best part, though, is the Easter story that goes along with each step and process of making the rolls. I love that it is a fun way to remember Christ and the reason we celebrate Easter.

Easter Gift – Resurrection Rolls Kit

This kit is a great way to SHARE this fun Easter tradition with someone else! Sharing these rolls allows you to spread a little bit of the JOY of Easter – with a focus on Christ and the resurrection.

The printable pages include all the tags and directions you need. Put them all together into a bag, box, or basket and present it to someone special.

To make your kit, you will need:

  • A bag, box, basket, or something to put the ingredients in
  • 1 tube roll of crescent rolls
  • 8 marshmallows
  • 2 Tbs butter (I found some small butter sticks that were perfect for adding to the package)
  • 3 Tbs sugar
  • 1/2 tsp cinnamon
  • printable tags

Putting Your Kit Together

Once you have all your ingredients, you’re ready to put your kit together!

  1. Print and cut out tags (cardstock works best for the smaller tags. Plain paper works best for tag #3, which will be wrapped around the crescent rolls.)
  2. Place 8 (or more!) marshmallows in a small bag and tie tag #1 around it.
  3. Mix together 3 TBSP of sugar and 1/2 tsp cinnamon in a small Ziploc bag. Tie tag #2 around this bag and 2 TBSP (or a small stick) of butter.
  4. For the crescent rolls, use tape to stick the pink (not flowered) end to the rolls, then wrap around and use double-sided tape or a glue stick to attach the flowers. This folds around the tube of rolls easiest if it is printed on paper (not cardstock.)
  5. Attach the “Resurrection Rolls” tag to a bag or box with a glue stick or double-sided tape. Or you can tie it to a bag or basket with a ribbon or twine.
  6. Place all the ingredients, along with tag # 4 into the bag.

* If preferred, simply place all items into the bag with the recipe card, instead of attaching tags to each individual item.

Who can you share these with?

  • your family
  • your neighbors
  • your ministering sisters
  • your friends …
  • anyone who could use a reminder of the reason we celebrate Easter!

So, print out these little tags, gather up all your ingredients, and having fun putting together and sharing this Easter tradition!

General Conference Activity Strips

General Conference Activity Strips

I’m always on the lookout for fun Conference activities for my family. Activities that keep us quiet are good. Activities that help us listen are better. But activities that help us ACT and keep Conference in our home after the Conference weekend is over are BEST. And these fun Conference Strips will fit into that category!

These simple strips can be used in so many ways. First of all, print them out, then decide how you’re going to use them! I’ve included the following suggestions, but get creative on how they could best help YOUR family to keep Conference in your home and hearts. And to act on all you’ve heard over the weekend.

general conference apostles strips

General Conference Activity Strips

There are strips for each of the Twelve Apostles, with an extra sheet of President Nelson (since we usually hear from him more often.) There is a sheet of strips with “Sister_____” for you to fill in, and then a sheet with blank lines for you to add the names of additional speakers.

Here are some ways you can use these fun strips:

Before Conference:

  • Sometime in the days leading up to Conference, have each family member look up and learn something about each of the Twelve and write it out on their strip. When it’s that speakers turn, it’s fun to read a little bit about them to get to know them better. You could then add their notes of what they teach us on the strip (or on the back.) This is a great FHE to prepare for Conference!
  • Have each person choose an apostle strip and have each person make a guess of what we’ll learn from him on the back. During Conference, they can take their chosen apostle and write notes on the front. When Conference is done, have each person go back and see if their guesses were right!

During Conference:

  • Print a set for each individual family member, or print just one for the whole family to work on together.
  • As each speaker speaks, mark the session (so you can refer to it again later) and then write down your favorite quotes, feelings, thoughts, or what you learned.
  • If you print one set for the whole family, you can divvy them up between everyone. Each person would be responsible for a few speakers.
  • Have the family work on each strip together. Pass each strip around as you listen to the speaker and have everyone add a thought or inspiration they have.
  • Color in the little pictures as you listen, or draw your own on the speakers that aren’t from the Quorum of the Twelve. Bonus – color their ties to match the tie they’re wearing when they speak!

“The greatest blessings of general conference come to us after the conference is over. Remember the pattern recorded frequently in scripture: We gather to hear the words of the Lord and then we return home to live them.”

-Robert D. Hales

After Conference:

Listening during Conference is only half the work! The BEST part comes as we apply what we’ve learned once Conference is over.

Elder Robert D. Hales once said, “The greatest blessings of general conference come to us after the conference is over. Remember the pattern recorded frequently in scripture: We gather to hear the words of the Lord and then we return home to live them.”

Here’ are some ways you can use these strips to continue to keep Conference in your hearts in the weeks after:

  • You can use these strips for upcoming FHE lessons. Simply choose one, listen / watch or study the talk together and then discuss how you can take action to apply what you’ve learned.
  • Use them as a dinner time discussion. Pull one out and read it over dinner and have a short discussion. What do you remember about the talk? What have you been doing to apply the teachings? What could you do this week to take action on this talk?
  • Have a Sunday devotional. Have each person grab a strip and share. Or have one person be in charge of teaching a short lesson and sharing their testimony about the talk.
  • Make them into a chain. Fold each strip over lengthwise (they are a little fat if you don’t) and then staple them into a chain. Then use this chain in any of the above settings. Pull of a strip each day at dinner, each week at your Sunday devotional or FHE night.
  • Put them in a “Conference basket.” Fold the strips and put them in a basket (or box, jar, bowl, hat, anything that will hold them.) Again, you can pull one out when you do one of the above activities.
  • Search for them. For a fun FHE activity, hide the strips around the room. Everyone has to search for them, then share.
  • Show them off. Choose one each week to display on your fridge or bulletin board. It will act as a reminder to everyone to live what they’ve learned.

p.s. If you’d like to help your family make the most of General Conference, check out my General Conference journals. They are a great way to prepare for Conference, then record your insights and impressions as you listen. The packet also includes an action plan so once Conference is over, you’ll be ready to apply what you’ve heard. And – there’s even a fun, special edition just for the kids.

I hope your Conference weekend is full of lots of listening and inspiration.

Church History Would You Rather …?

Church History Would You Rather …?

If Would you Rather is a favorite game around your house, this Doctrine & Covenants and Church History version is a must!  Would you Rather is a fun game that gives you a little peek into what others are thinking. Sometimes the answers bring laughs and other times they bring quiet contemplation. Sometimes the choices are easy and obvious and other times they are more complicated and difficult to choose from.

This Church History / Doctrine and Covenants version is a fun way to get a peek at what others are thinking while at the same time include some gospel discussion in your game.

Church History Would You Rather

This game is perfect for an FHE lesson or activity or for an addition to your Come, Follow Me study. The included questions are a fun way to think about what it would be like to go back in time and experience some of the events around the Restoration and history of the Church.

Unlike a traditional game of Would you Rather, which gives you one question with 2 options, the strips of this game are individual. This means you will need to use 2 strips, but you can come up with dozens of different combinations to keep the game going.

come follow me 2021 doctrine and covenants would you rather church history games

Playing Doctrine and Covenants Would You Rather

These questions could be used in so many different ways. You could use them during your Come, Follow Me time at home, in your Primary or Seminary class, or for a youth activity with the Young Women and Young Men. They are great for FHE, or use the for some dinner time conversation while you’re all sitting around the dinner table.

Simply cut out the cards and put them in jar (or hat or bowl) and get ready to play. Here’s a couple if different ways you can play this game, depending on the ages and type of group you’re playing with.

  • Choose 2 – Pass the basket around and have each person draw 2 cards. Then, simply go around the circle and they have to read their two options and their choice. Once everyone has had their turn, put them all back into the basket and pass it around again. Because they are single options on each card, you can play multiple rounds without getting the same choices.
  • Group Play – Have one person choose 2 cards and read them aloud. Then, go around and have everyone give their answer (and the reason why they made that choice!) Once everyone has answered, choose 2 new cards and go around again.
  • Scripture Chase – Remember those good ‘ol Seminary scripture chases? This is great for older kids who would love a more challenging approach. Have each person draw their 2 cards, then find the scripture to go with them. Then, go around and have each person read their cards and give the scripture reference that relates to it before they reveal which they would rather be. Make it into a race for more of a challenge.
  • For Younger Children – If you have younger children, this is a great time to briefly recount the stories in the Book of Mormon. You could choose 2 cards each day, then briefly tell (or have them tell) the story on each card. Then have them choose which they would rather be and discuss why.

Be sure to find out the WHY behind the answer! It’s fun to get insights into why people choose what they do.

As I Have Loved You – Free Printable Valentine’s Day FHE Lesson

Loving As The Savior Loves

Loving as the Savior does is the essence of the Gospel. This simple 5-Minute FHE lesson is a Family Home Evening lesson that provides discussion questions to help you find ways to show love just as the Savior did.

There’s also a cute printable to help your family find ways to show love to those around them. You can use the printable alone, or simply add in the discussion questions and you’ve got a 5-Minute FHE lesson!

5-Minute FHE

What is a 5-Minute FHE?

It’s a simple lesson and printable that takes:

  • Less than 5 minutes to prep. Simply print out the printable and grab a few supplies you likely already have on hand.
  • About 5 minutes to carry out. The lessons are based on discussion questions that can be used with any age. Keep them short and simple for younger children or go into more detail and discussion for older children.
  • A discussion style of learning. Using questions rather than statements allows family members to more readily share their thoughts and feelings. For younger children, you can easily add pictures to the questions to help them visualize and can keep the discussion to just one or two questions you feel are most relevant.

  • Show some pictures of Christ serving others from the Gospel Media Library.
  • Read John 13:34
  • How did Jesus show love to others?
  • How does Jesus show love to me?
  • Who can I show love to?
  • What can I do to show love to those around me?
  • Why is it important to show love like Jesus did?
  • How do I feel when I show love to others?
  • When is a time that someone showed love to me? How did I feel?
  • When is a time I showed love to someone else? How did I feel? How did they feel?

(for a discussion that involves a more hands-on activity, cut the question strips above and hide them around the room. Take turns finding them, then reading and discussing!)

Printable:

Think of ways you can show love to people around you. Write down something you will do this week in each of the areas. Color your paper and put it in a place where you can see it to help remind you to love like Jesus this week.

Treat Idea:

Make and decorate heart-shaped cookies. Deliver some extras to someone who can use some love!

May you have a joyful FHE as you learn to act in ways that show love as the Savior does.
